Elena Viatcheslavovna Dementieva, is a Russian professional tennis player, who has won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and a silver medal in the 2000 Olympics. Dementieva has also reached the finals of two Grand Slam events. Her career high ranking was World No. 3 which she achieved on April 6, 2009

In her fourth round match, Dementieva beat Chanelle Scheepers. Dementieva rallied from a set down to defeat Nadia Petrova in the quarterfinals to reach the semis. In the semifinals, she retired with a leg calf injury after losing the first set in a tie-break to Francesca Schiavone 6-7(3).
