He next played at the 2009 Valencia Open 500, an ATP 500 tournament in Valencia, Spain where he was seeded Second. Davydenko defeated Alejandro Falla 6-2, 6-1 in first round. He defeated Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Davydenko defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). He lost to Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 in the semifinals.

Davydenko beat Roger Federer 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to reach the finals of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2009. This is his first win over Federer in 13 attempts. In the final, Davydenko beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-4 to win the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2009.
