World Number 1 Roger Federer won his 16th Grand Slam title defeating Andy Murray in straight sets at the final of the Australian Open 2010. Federer who was a finalist here last year defeated world number four Andy Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(11) to win his fourth Australian Open title. Federer also became the fifth man to win four Australian Open Grand Slam titles. Briton's number one Andy Murray who is looking for his first grand slam title and to end the British drought of grand slam champions since 74 years had to wait for some more time. Fred Perry was the last British man to win a Grand Slam title in the 1936 US Open.
Federer started off well getting a break in the third game of the first set to go up 2-0. However, Murray as he did earlier in the tournament broke back immediately and held on to his serve the next game to level the first set at 2-2. He got 3 break point opportunities the next game, but Federer came up with aces to save the break points and held on to his serve. Federer broke Murray's serve in the eighth game of the first set to go up 5-3 and then served for the first set.The second set was much better for Federer as he continued the momentum from the first set. He broke Murray's serve early in the third game of the second set. There were no further break of serves in the next set and Federer took the second set 6-4 to go up two sets to love.
Murray was much better with his game in the third set as he got the first break in the third set in the sixth game. He went up 4-2 and then held on to his serve the next game to lead 5-2 in the third set. Federer hit a couple of aces the next game to hold on to his serve. Murray failed to hold on to his serve while serving for the third set at 5-3 as Federer got the break back with a couple of amazing shots. The third set went into a dramatic tie-break. Federer fought off five set points in the tie-break and won the match on his third championship point. Federer was at the top of his game and after two hours and 41 minutes, he won his 16th Grand Slam title and his first as a father.
In the post-match presentation, Murray broke down into tears admitting that the World No. 1 was too good with his game and is the better man tonight. Federer tried to consolidate him saying that Murray deserves to wins a grand slam title and that he will in the future.
