Rafael Nadal advances to semis defeating Fernando Gonzalez

World No. 3 Rafael Nadal defeated Fernando Gonzalez 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-0 to advance to the semifinal of the US Open 2009. The match which started on September 10 was interrupted by rain delays and Nadal finally grabbed the semi-final spot against Juan Martin del Potro in just 34 minutes on Day 13 at the US Open 2009. Rafael Nadal was leading 7-6(4), 6-6(3-2) when rain suspended play on Day 11. Day 12 was completely washed out. Resuming Day 13 leading at 3-2 in the second set tie-breaker, Nadal won four straight points to take the second set. He then won six straight games in the third set in just 34 minutes to advance to his second straight semifinal at the Flushing Meadows.

His opponent in the semi-final, Juan Martin del Potro defeated Marin Cilic in four sets in his quarterfinal match. Marin Cilic, who beat No. 2 Andy Murray in the fourth round got off to a good start and took the first set 6-4. But Del Potro broke Cilic in game six of second set and never looked back. He won the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 to make it to his first US Open semi-final.
