Maria Sharapova knocked out of Australian Open in first round

In a stunning upset on Day 1 at the Australian Open 2010, Russian Maria Kirilenko beat compatriot and 14th seeded Maria Sharapova 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4 in a marathon first round. This is Sharapova's worst performance in a Grand Slam match since her first round loss at French Open 2003. Sharapova who won the Australian Open grand slam in 2008 was sidelined for 10 months due to a right shoulder surgery.

Sharapova lost the first set in a tie-break. She took the second set 6-3 to take the match to the third set. However, she was dominated early in the final set, but rallied from 2-5 and broke Kirilenko's serve. She held on to her serve but dropped her own serve later to lose it 4-6. In a match that lasted 3 hours 22 minutes, Sharapova made 11 double faults with 72 unforced errors.
