Marin Cilic defeated World No. 2 Andy Murray to make it to the last 8 of the US Open 2009. Andy Murray's hopes of winning the US Open title this year has been destroyed by the Croatian as he lost the match in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. Murray failed to make use of 2 set points in the first set at 5-4 and Cilic made full use of it, by getting a break in the eleventh game of the first set, and then holding on to his serve to take the first set 7-5. Cilic continued the momentum and broke Murray twice in the second set and in the third set.

Marin Cilic will face Juan Martin del Potro in the quarterfinals. Del Potro won his fourth round match defeating Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets.
