Despite probably not playing at her best level, World No. 1 Serena Williams proved that she is still good enough to beat Maria Sharapova to win a record sixth title at Key Biscayne. Serena Williams rallied to defeat Maria Sharapova 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the final. Her sixth title at Key Biscayne was one more than Steffi Graf achieved at the same venue. Losing the first set, Serena Williams managed to break Sharapova in the fifth game of the second set and then went on to win 10 successive games to win the title.
With the victory, Serena Williams better her head to head record against Maria Sharapova 12-2, winning all the last 11 meetings. Sharapova is 19-3 this season and has recently won the BNP Paribas Open defeating Caroline Wozniacki. This is Serena Williams second title in 2013.
