World No. 8 and third seeded Robin Soderling overcame Florent Serra of France to win the first round match at ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament 2010 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Soderling dropped the first set 4-6, but rallied to win the next two 6-4, 6-1. Soderling is a wild card entry into the Rotterdam tournament is also seeded No. 3 in the absence of World No. 4 Rafael Nadal. This is Soderling's first victory in the 2010 season. Soderling lost in the first round of both Aircel Chennai Open 2010 and Australian Open 2010 in January. Having dropped the first set, Soderling fired 26 aces and allowed Serra to get only one break-point opportunity in the second and third sets. He will next face Igor Sijsling in the second round.

Fifth seed Tommy Robredo beat wild card entry Robin Haase 7-6(4), 6-4 to advance to the second round. He will next play Florian Mayer in the second round, who beat Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(6). Andreas Seppi beat Stephane Bohli and Igor Sijsling beat Mischa Zverev in their first round matches on Day 1.
